We Were Never Meant for Bubbles

In 1971, David Vetter was born at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston with severe combined immunodeficiency, a condition that left him without a functioning immune system. Without that intricate cellular community defending his body, even a common cold could prove fatal. Doctors placed David inside a sterile plastic bubble, where he lived for twelve years, shielded from the world but cut off from direct human touch.

A healthy immune system is one of nature's most remarkable communities. T cells identify threats. B cells manufacture antibodies. Macrophages engulf invaders. Dendritic cells carry intelligence between them. No single cell can protect the body alone. Health depends on their constant, coordinated collaboration, a microscopic society so interconnected that the failure of one member endangers the whole.

The Apostle Paul saw this truth long before modern immunology confirmed it. "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you,'" he wrote in 1 Corinthians 12. Just as no single immune cell can defend the body by itself, no single believer can flourish in spiritual isolation.

We live in an age that makes it easy to retreat into our own bubbles, comfortable, controlled, and alone. But we were designed for the beautiful, messy, life-giving work of depending on one another. The Body of Christ was never meant to function in isolation.
