What Hides in the Dark
In 2003, NASA pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at one of the darkest, emptiest patches of night sky — a spot near the constellation Fornax no bigger than a grain of sand held at arm's length. Most astronomers expected to see almost nothing. The telescope gathered light from that tiny patch for over eleven days.
What came back stunned the scientific world. That "empty" darkness contained approximately ten thousand galaxies — each one holding billions of stars, stretching back nearly thirteen billion years. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, as it came to be known, revealed that what looked like nothing was, in fact, everything.
I think about that when people sit across from me and say they see nothing ahead. When the diagnosis comes back, when the marriage crumbles, when the phone call arrives at two in the morning — life can look as dark and empty as that patch of sky over Fornax.
But the God who scattered ten thousand galaxies into what looked like nothing is the same God who speaks into the darkest chapters of your life. The prophet Isaiah knew this: "I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness, riches stored in secret places" (Isaiah 45:3). The Almighty does not waste the dark. He fills it.
You may not see what He is doing. The exposure time may feel impossibly long. But the light is there — ancient, persistent, and already on its way to you. What looks like emptiness to your eyes is, to the eyes of God, a field full of glory waiting to be revealed.
