What Looks Like Nothing

In 1995, astronomer Robert Williams made a decision many colleagues called foolish. As director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, he pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at a tiny patch of sky near the constellation Ursa Major — a spot that appeared completely empty, no bigger than a grain of sand held at arm's length. He kept the shutter open for ten consecutive days.

When the image finally resolved, it revealed over three thousand galaxies — spirals and clusters and ancient light stretching back more than twelve billion years. What everyone assumed was emptiness was overflowing with structure and design.

Some of you feel like that dark patch of sky right now. You look at your life and see nothing remarkable — no grand calling, no obvious significance. You wonder if the Almighty has forgotten the coordinates of your existence.

But God does not waste space. He does not create without intention. Just as those galaxies were burning with purpose long before any telescope could detect them, the Most High has placed purpose inside you that may not yet be visible — not to your neighbors, not to your critics, and perhaps not even to yourself.

The problem was never the emptiness of that patch of sky. The problem was that no one had looked long enough. Give God time. What He has placed within you will come into focus.
