What the Marble Already Knew

In Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia, four unfinished Michelangelo sculptures line the hallway leading to the famous David. They are called the Prisoners — massive human figures caught mid-emergence from rough blocks of Carrara marble. A torso twists free here. A knee presses outward there. But the stone still grips them, and you can see both the figure and the rock that holds it.

Michelangelo believed every block of marble already contained a figure within it. The sculptor's task was not to impose a shape but to remove everything that was not the true form. He chipped away — not to create something from nothing, but to reveal what was already there.

Paul writes something remarkably similar to the Corinthians: "We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory" (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Spirit's work in us is not the imposition of a foreign shape. It is the patient removal of everything that is not who God created us to be.

Transformation feels like loss sometimes. The chisel stings. But what falls away was never the real you. It was only the stone that kept you trapped. The Master Sculptor sees the image of Christ already within you — and He will not stop until you are free.
