What the Tallest Trees Know
In 1997, forest ecologist Suzanne Simard published a discovery in the journal Nature that changed how we understand forests. She found that trees are not isolated competitors fighting for sunlight. Beneath the soil, vast networks of mycorrhizal fungi connect their roots in what scientists now call the "Wood Wide Web."
But here is what stunned researchers most. The largest, oldest trees — the ones Simard came to call "mother trees" — do not hoard their resources. They send carbon, water, and nutrients through the fungal network to smaller, struggling seedlings nearby. The mightiest trees in the forest spend their strength feeding the weakest.
This turns every assumption upside down. We look at a towering Douglas fir and see dominance. But beneath the surface, that giant is quietly pouring itself out for saplings that cannot yet reach the sunlight on their own.
Jesus said, "Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant" (Matthew 20:26). True greatness has never been about towering over others. It is about using whatever strength God has given you to lift up those still growing.
The next time you are tempted to measure your worth by how high you stand, remember the lesson from the forest floor. The greatest trees became great not by reaching higher, but by reaching down.
