When Aslan Calls Your Name
In C.S. Lewis's The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, there is a moment that has quietly undone generations of readers. Eustace Scrubb — a selfish, miserable boy who has been transformed into a dragon by his own greed — tries desperately to peel off his scales. He scratches and claws, layer after layer, but the dragon skin keeps growing back. He cannot fix himself.
Then Aslan comes. The great lion tells Eustace, "You will have to let me undress you." With a single tear of his claw, Aslan cuts deeper than Eustace ever dared, and the dragon skin falls away. It hurts terribly. But underneath, there is a boy again — tender, new, blinking in the light.
Lewis understood something about purpose that we so often forget: we cannot manufacture it by our own striving. We scratch and claw at self-improvement, career goals, and five-year plans, peeling back one layer only to find another layer of the same lostness underneath.
But the Living God does not ask us to remake ourselves. He says, "Let Me do it." And when the Almighty cuts to the heart of who we are, what He uncovers is not emptiness — it is the person He designed before the foundations of the world.
Your purpose was never yours to invent. It was always His to reveal. The question is whether you will let Him reach that deep.
