When Courage Costs You Everything
In Victor Hugo's Les Misérables — brought to life in the 2012 film — Jean Valjean faces a moment that strips courage down to its rawest form. A stranger has been arrested and mistaken for Valjean, the escaped convict. The man is about to be condemned in Valjean's place. Meanwhile, Valjean has built a new life as a respected mayor and factory owner. Silence would protect everything he has worked for. No one would ever know.
But Valjean walks into the courtroom at Arras, stands before the judge, and declares his true identity. He surrenders his reputation, his freedom, and his future — because he cannot let an innocent man suffer for his sake.
That is the shape of biblical courage. Not the absence of fear, but the refusal to let fear make your decisions. It is the same courage Esther summoned when she approached the king uninvited, saying, "If I perish, I perish." It is the courage that drove Peter and John to tell the Sanhedrin, "We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
Notice that in every case, courage costs something real. Valjean lost his comfortable life. Esther risked death. The apostles faced prison. Courage that costs nothing is just preference.
The Almighty never promised that doing the right thing would be easy. He promised something better — that He would be with us when it is hard. And that presence is enough to make ordinary people breathe deep and walk into the courtroom anyway.
