When Every Device Becomes a Tower

After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in September 2017, cell towers lay in ruins and millions of people lost contact with their loved ones. A company called goTenna deployed small mesh networking devices across the island. These pocket-sized radios needed no cell towers and no internet connection. Each device automatically relayed messages for nearby devices, creating a chain of communication that stretched across mountains and valleys where no infrastructure remained.

Here is what made it remarkable: no single device was the network. Every device that joined made the whole network stronger and farther-reaching. Remove one, and the others rerouted. Add one, and everyone's reach expanded.

Paul described the church in strikingly similar terms two thousand years before anyone invented a radio: "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you'" (1 Corinthians 12:21). In the body of Christ, every member carries the signal of God's love a little farther. The retired teacher who mentors a struggling young parent. The teenager who visits the nursing home on Saturday mornings. The quiet deacon who shows up with a casserole before anyone thinks to call.

We live in an age that celebrates self-sufficiency, but the gospel insists on interdependence. You were never meant to be a standalone tower, broadcasting alone. You were designed to be part of a mesh, each connection amplifying grace, each relationship extending the reach of the Kingdom.

The signal of God's love travels farther when it passes through all of us.
