When Forgiveness Found a Melody
In 2002, Renee Napier received the phone call every parent dreads. Her daughter Meagan had been killed by a drunk driver named Eric Smallridge. The grief was crushing — the kind that bends a person toward bitterness for the rest of their life.
But Renee did something no one expected. She forgave Eric Smallridge. Not in a vague, theological sense — she visited him in prison, looked him in the eye, and told him she forgave him. Then she went further. She petitioned the court to reduce his sentence, believing that her daughter's death should not destroy two lives.
Years later, Renee shared her story with singer-songwriter Matthew West, who turned it into the song Forgiveness. In one haunting line, West captures what so many of us feel: "It's the hardest thing to give away, and the last thing on your mind today." The song doesn't pretend forgiveness is easy. It simply testifies that forgiveness is possible — because Someone forgave us first.
Paul wrote, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32). Renee Napier didn't forgive because it felt natural. She forgave because she had been forgiven by a God whose mercy runs deeper than our deepest wounds.
This morning, who is God asking you to release? Forgiveness is never the easy chorus to sing — but it may be the one that finally sets you free.
