When God Destroys the Key
Every iPhone contains a tiny chip called the Secure Enclave. This chip holds the encryption keys that make your personal data readable — your photos, messages, passwords, everything. When you erase an iPhone, something remarkable happens. Apple's engineers did not design the phone to laboriously overwrite every piece of data. Instead, the Secure Enclave simply destroys the encryption key. In an instant, everything stored on that device becomes permanent, irreversible gibberish. The data technically still sits on the hardware, but without the key, it can never be read again. Not by Apple, not by forensic experts, not by anyone. It is, for all practical purposes, gone forever.
This is what the Almighty does with our sin.
When God forgives, He does not merely move our transgressions to some celestial recycle bin where they might be recovered later. The prophet Micah declared that God "will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea" (Micah 7:19). The psalmist wrote, "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). Hebrews tells us God says, "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more" (Hebrews 10:17).
God destroys the key. Our past becomes permanently, irreversibly unreadable — not because it never happened, but because the One who holds all things has chosen to make it as though it never was. That is the scandal of grace. When the Almighty forgives, no power in heaven or on earth can retrieve what He has erased.
