When God Hears: Hagar's Story and Our Afflictions
In Genesis 16, we meet Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, caught in a web of infertility and desperation. Sarai, unable to conceive, offers Hagar to Abram, seeking to build a family through her. But when Hagar conceives, the situation spirals into conflict, mirroring the struggles we often face when we try to manipulate God's timing. Hagar, now despised by Sarai, flees into the wilderness, a place of isolation and despair. This resonates with the experiences of many today who feel overlooked, marginalized, and without hope.
Consider the story of Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani activist who, at fifteen, was shot by the Taliban for advocating for girls' education. Both women, in their respective contexts, experienced profound affliction.
Yet, in the wilderness, Hagar encounters the angel of Yahweh, a divine intervention that changes everything. The angel not only sees her plight but also speaks words of comfort and promise, revealing that God has heard her affliction and will bless her seed. This echoes the Pentecostal understanding of God as a present and active force in our lives, a God who hears our cries and responds with tangible grace. Like Hagar, we too can encounter God in our wilderness experiences. We can expect a divine intervention, a word of hope, and a promise of a future. Hagar named the well Beer-lahai-roi, "The Well of the Living One Who Sees Me," a testament to her transformative encounter with God. May we, like Hagar, recognize that even in our darkest moments, God sees us, hears us, and is present with us, ready to multiply our seed and fulfill His divine purpose in our lives.
