When Healing Begins with Surrender

In bone marrow transplantation, there is a phase that sounds deeply counterintuitive. Before a patient can receive life-saving marrow from a donor, their own immune system must first be completely destroyed. Oncologists call this myeloablative conditioning — days of intensive chemotherapy that wipe out the patient's bone marrow entirely. For a terrifying stretch of time, the patient has essentially no immune system at all. A common cold could prove fatal. They live in strict isolation, stripped of every natural defense their body ever built.

And yet patients choose this. They walk into that vulnerability willingly, because they trust that what comes next — the transplant, the slow rebuilding — will give them a life their damaged marrow never could.

This is what spiritual courage often looks like. It rarely resembles a warrior charging into battle. More often, it looks like surrendering the defenses we have spent years constructing — our self-sufficiency, our carefully maintained walls, our quiet insistence that we can heal ourselves. God sometimes asks us to let Him dismantle what is not working before He can transplant something new.

Paul understood this when he wrote, "When I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10). True courage is not the absence of vulnerability. It is choosing vulnerability because you trust the Physician.

If God is asking you to release something today — some old defense, some familiar wall — take heart. The stripping away is not the end of the story. It is preparation for new life.
