When Hurt Became Holy

In 2002, Johnny Cash recorded a cover of Hurt, a song originally written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The original was a young man's anthem of nihilism and self-destruction. But when Cash sang it — his voice weathered by decades of addiction, heartbreak, and hard-won faith — the song became something entirely different. The same words. The same melody. But now they carried the weight of a man who had walked through the valley and come out the other side held by the hands of the Almighty.

The music video showed Cash's trembling hands, his aging face, footage from his younger years. Reznor later said that when he heard Cash's version, the song no longer belonged to him. "It was as if I was being shown a door I hadn't known existed," he admitted.

That is what transformation does. It does not erase the past — it redeems it. The same life, the same story, but now sung in a different key. What was once a anthem of despair became a confession of grace.

The Apostle Paul understood this. "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here" (2 Corinthians 5:17). God does not give us a new script. He gives us a new voice — one that turns our deepest wounds into worship. Your broken past is not disqualifying. In the hands of the Redeemer, it becomes your most powerful testimony.
