When Mercy - Story
A few months ago, I found myself at a local park, watching children play while their parents chatted nearby. One child, a little girl named Sophie, seemed to be struggling. She was attempting to climb a small hill, her tiny legs shaking with effort and her face a mix of determination and frustration. I could see that she was on the verge of giving up, her tears welling up as she whispered to herself, “I can’t do it.”
Just then, a friend of hers approached. This friend, a bit older and wiser, squatted down beside Sophie. “You can do it,” she encouraged. “Just take one step at a time.” Encouraged by her words, Sophie took a deep breath and tried again. Slowly, she pushed through her doubts, step by step, and with her friend's hand on her back, she finally reached the top, her face lighting up with joy.
In that moment, I was reminded of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, where love is described as patient and kind, believing all things and hoping all things. Mercy, like the kindness Sophie received, isn’t just about feeling for someone; it’s an active choice to lift them up when they stumble.
As we seek to grow spiritually, remember that obedience to God's call often means extending mercy to those who are struggling, just as we sometimes need that same mercy ourselves. Our faith is not just about standing alone at the top of the hill; it’s about helping each other climb, step by step, toward the purpose God has for us.
