When Peace Like a River Runs Through Loss
In 1873, Horatio Spafford put his wife and four daughters aboard the SS Ville du Havre, bound for England. He planned to join them after wrapping up business in Chicago — a city where he had already lost nearly everything in the Great Fire two years earlier. His young son had died shortly before that.
Then came the telegram from his wife Anna, two words that no parent should ever have to read: "Saved alone." The ship had collided with another vessel and sunk in twelve minutes. All four of his daughters were gone.
Spafford boarded the next available ship to meet his grieving wife. As the vessel passed near the spot where his children had perished in the cold Atlantic, he sat down and wrote words that Christians have been singing for over a hundred and fifty years: "When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll — whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul."
That hymn was not written from comfort. It was written from the deepest valley a human heart can walk through. And yet Spafford chose to anchor his soul not in what he had lost, but in the faithfulness of the God who remained.
Perseverance is not the absence of grief. It is the stubborn, holy decision to keep singing even when the sea has taken everything. The Almighty does not promise calm waters — but He promises to be present in every storm.
