When Self-control - Contemporary Example
Last summer, a small group from our church decided to take on a community garden project. Among them was an elderly gentleman named Mr. Thompson, known for his unwavering faith and warm smile. He often shared stories of how he had faced trials in his life, but none quite like this one.
As they began their work, the group quickly discovered that tending to the garden was not an easy task. The sun blazed, pests invaded, and the weeds seemed to multiply overnight. Frustration mounted, and several members considered giving up. But not Mr. Thompson. Instead of allowing his own discomfort to dictate his actions, he gathered the group one evening. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, “Friends, do you remember Proverbs 3:5-6? ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.’”
Mr. Thompson shared how the garden was more than just a patch of soil; it was a place of growth—both for the plants and for their spirits. They needed to cultivate self-control, to endure through the challenges together, and to trust that God was guiding them.
Weeks later, their hard work yielded a harvest of vibrant vegetables and fragrant flowers. But more importantly, they had cultivated a bond of love and faith, learning that through trials, they found strength not only in themselves but in each other. As we face our own gardens of life, may we remember Mr. Thompson’s lesson: through self-control and trust in God, we can flourish even amidst the most challenging seasons.
