When Self-control - Contemporary Example
Last summer, I had the joy of watching a local youth group organize a community clean-up day. As the sun crept over the horizon, brightening the neighborhood with a soft glow, I saw a group of teenagers armed with gloves and trash bags, filled with excitement and laughter. It was a sight that filled my heart with hope.
Yet, as they began their task, I noticed a few of them drift away, drawn to their phones and the allure of social media. Their immediate impulses tugged at them—a desire for entertainment, for connection through screens rather than through service. But one girl, Hannah, stood firm. She was a natural leader, and when she saw her friends distracted, she gently reminded them of their purpose. “We’re here to help, remember? Let’s make this place shine!” Her words were a beacon, and one by one, the others returned, refocused on the task at hand.
As I watched them work together, I was reminded of Paul’s words in Galatians 5:22-23, where self-control is listed among the fruits of the Spirit. In a moment where distraction could have held them back from their goal, love prompted Hannah to exercise her self-control. That day, they discovered not just the joy of service, but a greater clarity of purpose—together, they transformed not only the park but also their hearts.
Through Hannah’s example, we see that self-control opens the door to opportunities for love and service. It is in these moments, grounded in the Spirit, that we grow spiritually, discovering the beauty of our calling to serve one another.
