When Silver Becomes a Second Chance

In Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, a convict named Jean Valjean stumbles to the door of Bishop Myriel after nineteen years in prison. No inn will take him. No family wants him. He is a man the world has finished with. The Bishop feeds him, gives him a bed, and treats him like a guest.

Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the Bishop's silver in the night.

When the police drag him back the next morning, silver in hand, the Bishop does something that changes the trajectory of an entire life. He tells the officers that the silver was a gift. Then he hands Valjean two silver candlesticks as well, saying, "I have bought your soul for God."

That single act of unearned grace cracks open a door Valjean thought had been sealed forever — the door of hope. He spends the rest of his life becoming the man the Bishop already saw in him.

This is what the Gospel does. When we come to God with nothing but guilt and empty hands, He does not call the authorities. He sets the table. He hands us more than we dared to take. The Almighty looks at every life the world has written off and says, "I'm not finished with you."

Hope is not the feeling that things might improve. Hope is the God who treats us as though we already belong to Him — because, through Christ, we do.
