When the Burden Is Too Heavy to Carry Alone
Near the end of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, Frodo Baggins collapses on the slopes of Mount Doom. The Ring he has carried across Middle-earth has grown unbearably heavy — not in physical weight, but in spiritual corruption. He cannot take another step. The quest that began with quiet courage in the Shire seems destined to end in ash and failure.
But Samwise Gamgee refuses to let the story end there. He tells Frodo that he cannot carry the Ring for him, but he can carry Frodo himself. And with that, this ordinary gardener hoists his friend onto his back and climbs.
Sam had every reason to quit. He was starving, exhausted, and deep inside enemy territory with no reasonable hope of survival. Yet he persevered — not because he was strong, but because his love for Frodo was stronger than his despair.
Scripture tells us to "carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2). The Christian life was never meant to be a solo climb. The Almighty places people in our path — not to remove our trials, but to help us endure them. And He calls us to do the same for others.
When your legs give out on the mountain, look beside you. God's perseverance often wears the face of a friend.
