When the Father Leaves the Stands
On August 3, 1992, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal at the Barcelona Olympics. He was running the race of his life. Then, midway through the backstretch, his hamstring snapped. Sixty-five thousand spectators watched him crumple to the track, clutching his leg, his Olympic dream shattered in an instant.
What happened next became one of the most replayed moments in sports history. Redmond pulled himself up. Weeping, he began hobbling toward the finish line. Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulders and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did — father and son, crossing the line as one, the crowd standing and sobbing.
Healing doesn't always look like the pain disappearing. Sometimes healing looks like a Father who refuses to stay in the stands while His child suffers. The prophet Isaiah wrote that the Lord binds up the brokenhearted and heals their wounds. Not from a distance. Not with instructions shouted from above. Jehovah Rapha — the God Who Heals — comes down, pushes past every barrier, wraps His arm around us, and says, "We're going to finish this together."
You may be limping today. The dream may feel shattered. But the Father has already left the stands. He is right beside you.
