When the Father Left the Stands
At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final with one dream — to win a medal. Halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the ground as the other runners disappeared ahead of him.
What happened next remains one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Derek pulled himself up and began hopping toward the finish line, sobbing with every step. Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Sixty-five thousand people rose to their feet as father and son crossed the line.
Derek didn't earn a medal that day. He didn't even post an official time. But he finished — because his father refused to stay in the stands while his son suffered alone.
That is the gospel of redemption. We set out to run a race we cannot finish. Sin tears through us like a torn muscle, and we collapse under the weight of our own brokenness. But the Father — our Heavenly Father — does not watch from a distance. He comes down. He pushes past every barrier. He wraps His arms around us and whispers, "We're going to finish this together."
You do not have to crawl to the finish line alone. El Shaddai, the Almighty God, has already left the stands for you.
