When the Ground Appears Beneath You
In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, there is a moment that has stayed with audiences for decades. Indiana Jones stands at the edge of a vast chasm inside an ancient temple. His father is dying from a gunshot wound, and the only way to save him is to cross this impossible gap to reach the Holy Grail. His father's journal offers one cryptic instruction: a leap of faith from the lion's head.
Indy looks down. There is nothing but empty air and a bottomless drop. Every instinct screams to step back. But he closes his eyes, lifts one foot, and steps out into nothing.
And the ground is there. A stone bridge, perfectly camouflaged against the canyon walls, catches his weight. It was always there. He simply could not see it.
This is how faith works. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. The bridge does not appear and then we step. We step, and then we discover what God has already put in place.
So many of us are standing at the edge right now, facing a diagnosis, a financial crisis, a broken relationship, waiting for the path to reveal itself before we move. But the Almighty does not ask us to see the whole road. He asks us to take one step. Just one.
The ground will be there. It always has been.
