When the Hubble Telescope Was Nearsighted

When NASA launched the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990, it was supposed to be humanity's clearest window into the cosmos. But weeks after deployment, scientists discovered a devastating flaw: the primary mirror had been ground to the wrong shape, off by just 2.2 microns — roughly one-fiftieth the width of a human hair. The most expensive scientific instrument ever built was sending back blurry images. Late-night comedians mocked it. Congress questioned whether the entire project was a billion-dollar failure.

But NASA did not scrap Hubble. In December 1993, astronauts aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour performed one of the most daring repair missions in history. Over five spacewalks, they installed corrective optics — essentially giving the telescope prescription glasses. When the first corrected images came back, the control room went silent. Hubble could see farther and more clearly than anyone had imagined.

Sometimes our lives feel like that flawed mirror — close to what God intended, but distorted in ways that blur everything. Hope is not the belief that we were never broken. Hope is the confidence that the One who designed us has already planned the repair mission. As the apostle Paul wrote, "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6).

Your flaw is not the end of your story. The Almighty who flung the stars into space is precise enough to correct a mirror off by one-fiftieth of a hair — and faithful enough to finish what He started in you.
