When the Music You Were Made For Is Bigger Than What You Can Hear
By the time Ludwig van Beethoven began composing his Ninth Symphony, he was almost entirely deaf. The man whose life was built around sound could no longer hear a single note he wrote. He composed by memory, by mathematics, by feeling the vibrations of his piano through a wooden rod clenched between his teeth and pressed against the soundboard.
In 1824, when the Ninth Symphony premiered in Vienna, Beethoven stood on stage with his back to the audience, conducting alongside the official conductor. When the final movement ended — that soaring, magnificent "Ode to Joy" — the audience erupted. Standing ovation. Tears. People throwing hats into the air. But Beethoven kept conducting. He had no idea it was over. A soloist finally walked over and gently turned him around so he could see what his music had done.
He created something that moved the world, and he never heard a note of it.
There is something in that moment that every believer needs to understand about purpose. The Almighty does not wait until our circumstances are ideal to unfold His design for our lives. He does not require that we fully comprehend what He is building through us. Beethoven's deafness did not cancel his purpose — it deepened it.
You may not yet see the fruit of your faithfulness. You may not hear the music your obedience is making. But the God who called you is composing something through your life that is bigger than what you can perceive. Keep writing the music. One day, He will turn you around.
