When the Road Goes Dark, Keep Walking

In J.R.R. Tolkien's The Return of the King, there is a moment near the end of the journey that has stayed with readers for generations. Frodo and Sam are climbing the slopes of Mount Doom. Frodo is utterly spent. The Ring has become so heavy he can barely crawl. Every reason to quit surrounds them — ash, darkness, thirst, and the near certainty that even if they succeed, they will not survive.

Then Sam does something remarkable. He cannot carry the Ring — that burden belongs to Frodo alone. But he looks at his broken friend and says, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." And he lifts Frodo onto his back and climbs.

This is what perseverance looks like in the life of faith. It is not the absence of exhaustion. It is not pretending the weight is light. It is one more step when everything in you says stop. And more often than not, it comes not from sheer willpower but from the stubborn love of someone who refuses to let you collapse alone.

The Apostle Paul knew this kind of endurance. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). God rarely removes the mountain. But He gives us strength for the climb — sometimes through His Spirit, sometimes through the friend who says, "I will carry you."
