When the Signal Cannot Reach You

When NASA's Perseverance rover entered the Martian atmosphere on February 18, 2021, engineers in Pasadena could do nothing but wait. They call it the "seven minutes of terror" — the period between atmospheric entry and touchdown when the eleven-minute signal delay between Earth and Mars means the spacecraft must execute every maneuver entirely on its own. No mid-course corrections from mission control. No abort commands. By the time Earth receives word that entry has begun, the rover has already landed or crashed.

For seven minutes, Perseverance had to trust the instructions written into its code long before launch — firing thrusters, deploying a supersonic parachute, lowering itself on cables from a hovering sky crane — all without hearing a single confirming voice from home.

There are seasons in the life of faith that feel exactly like those seven minutes. You step into a new calling, leave behind what is familiar, confront an impossible diagnosis, speak truth when silence would be safer — and heaven seems quiet. The signal feels delayed. You cry out and hear nothing back.

But courage was never the absence of silence. Courage is trusting what God wrote into your heart before you ever entered the atmosphere. "Be strong and courageous," He told Joshua. "Do I not command you?" The instructions were given before the descent began.
