When the Signal Weakens
Every time you stream a show on Netflix, a technology called adaptive bitrate streaming is working behind the scenes. Netflix engineers built this system to handle an inevitable reality: internet connections fluctuate. Your Wi-Fi weakens when someone starts the microwave. A network hiccup drops a cluster of data packets. Congestion slows everything to a crawl.
Here is what the technology does not do: it does not quit. It does not flash a message that reads, "Conditions are no longer ideal. Shutting down." Instead, it adapts. When bandwidth drops, the video resolution lowers — the picture gets grainier, but the stream keeps playing. When packets are lost, the system requests them again. When the connection strengthens, the quality climbs right back. The stream perseveres.
The writer of Hebrews understood this principle long before streaming existed: "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1). Notice the text does not say, "Run with perfection." It says perseverance. There will be seasons when your spiritual bandwidth is low — when grief clouds your vision, when doubt degrades the signal, when exhaustion makes everything feel buffered and delayed.
Perseverance does not demand peak performance. It demands that you stay in the stream. Keep praying, even when the words feel pixelated. Keep showing up, even at lower resolution. The signal will strengthen again.
