When the Silver Wasn't Enough

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, Jean Valjean stumbles to the door of the Bishop of Digne, a broken man. Nineteen years in prison have hollowed him out. No inn will take him. No table will seat him. He is a number, not a name. But the Bishop welcomes him in, serves him dinner on fine silver, and offers him a clean bed.

Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the silverware in the dead of night. When the police drag him back the next morning, the stolen goods stuffed in his bag, the Bishop does something that defies every courtroom on earth. He tells the officers the silver was a gift. Then he picks up two silver candlesticks and presses them into Valjean's trembling hands. "I have bought your soul for God," he says.

That moment shatters Valjean. Not the prison. Not the chains. Not the years of hard labor. Grace is what finally breaks him open — and grace is what rebuilds him into an entirely different man.

This is the gospel in a single scene. We come to the Almighty with nothing to offer but evidence of our failure, and He responds not with the punishment we deserve but with an extravagant gift we never expected. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Where sin increased, grace increased all the more" (Romans 5:20).

Restoration never begins with our performance. It begins the moment God looks at our wreckage and says, "I'm not done with you yet."
