When the Tracking Finally Stops
If you have ever searched for a pair of running shoes online, you know what happens next. For weeks, those same shoes follow you everywhere — in your email sidebar, on social media, tucked between news articles. One idle search, and suddenly the internet will not let you forget it. Algorithms remember everything. They build a profile of every click, every search, every late-night impulse, and they hold it over you, whispering, "This is who you are. This is what you want."
When Apple released its App Tracking Transparency feature in 2021, it gave users a simple but revolutionary choice: "Ask App Not to Track." One tap, and the surveillance stopped. Your browsing history no longer trailed behind you like a shadow. You could move through digital spaces without your past dictating what came next.
That is a faint echo of what Paul describes in Romans 8:1 — "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Sin is the ultimate tracking algorithm. It catalogues every failure, every selfish choice, every whispered lie, and it plays them back on an endless loop: "This is who you are." But when Christ sets us free, the tracking stops. Our past no longer follows us into every room. We are no longer defined by our worst clicks.
The gospel does not offer us incognito mode — a flimsy disguise that still logs everything on the backend. It offers a complete deletion. A fresh start that no algorithm can undo.
