When the Trembling Stops

In neurology, few moments are as breathtaking as when a deep brain stimulation device is switched on for the first time. A patient with advanced Parkinson's disease — someone whose hands have trembled uncontrollably for years, who cannot lift a glass of water without spilling it, who has watched their own body become a prison — sits in the clinic while the neurologist activates the small electrode implanted near the subthalamic nucleus of the brain. Within seconds, the tremor stops. The hand goes still. Patients have broken into tears, held a pen, and written their name for the first time in years. The shaking that defined their every waking moment simply ceases.

The device does not remove the disease. Parkinson's is still there. But the signal that held the body captive is interrupted by a stronger current.

This is what the apostle Paul describes when he writes, "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." The old signal — guilt, shame, the compulsive pull toward self-destruction — does not simply fade on its own. It is interrupted by something stronger. The Holy Spirit introduces a new current into the deep places of the soul, and what once held us captive loses its grip.

You may still live in a broken world. But the trembling can stop. A stronger signal has come.
