When the Whole World Watched Her Walk Away
In July 2021, Simone Biles stood on the world's biggest stage at the Tokyo Olympics — widely regarded as the greatest gymnast in history, carrying the weight of a nation's gold-medal expectations. And then she did something no one anticipated. She withdrew.
Mid-competition, Biles stepped back from the team final and then from four individual event finals, citing a dangerous mental block gymnasts call "the twisties" — a sudden loss of air awareness that can lead to catastrophic injury. The criticism was swift. Quitter. Weak. Selfish.
But Biles understood something profound: true freedom is not performing on command for the approval of others. True freedom is knowing who you are apart from what the crowd demands of you.
Three years later, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she returned and won three gold medals and a silver. She didn't come back to prove the critics wrong. She came back because she was free.
Paul wrote, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). So many of us live enslaved — not to chains we can see, but to the relentless pressure to perform, to please, to prove our worth.
The freedom Christ offers isn't freedom to do whatever we want. It's freedom from the crushing need to earn what has already been given. You are not what you perform. You are whose you are.
