When You Wake Up to a New Vehicle
Every Tesla owner knows the experience. You park your car in the garage on a Tuesday night — the same car you've driven for two years, with the same dashboard, the same seats, the same familiar feel. But overnight, Tesla pushes an over-the-air software update. Wednesday morning, you sit behind the same steering wheel and discover your car can do things it couldn't do twelve hours ago. New safety features. Better battery efficiency. Sometimes entirely new capabilities, like the ability to summon the car from across a parking lot. The body of the vehicle never changed. Not a single bolt was replaced. But from the inside out, it has been made fundamentally new.
Paul understood this kind of transformation long before Silicon Valley existed. "If anyone is in Christ," he wrote, "the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here" (2 Corinthians 5:17). When the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a human life, the outer shell may look familiar. Your neighbors might not notice anything different on Wednesday morning. But the internal operating system has been rewritten. Old patterns of fear get replaced with courage. Bitterness gives way to forgiveness you didn't know you had the capacity for. Purpose overwrites aimlessness.
Here is the difference, though: Tesla's updates eventually stop when the hardware becomes obsolete. But the Spirit's transforming work in us never reaches end of life. Every morning is another update. Every surrender, another new feature installed by grace.
