When Your Father Meets You on the Track
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal carrying the weight of years — four surgeries, a lifetime of training, and the memory of pulling up injured at Seoul four years earlier. This was his moment of redemption.
Halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. Redmond crumpled to the ground as the other runners disappeared ahead of him. The medical team approached with a stretcher, but Redmond waved them off. He stood up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.
Then something happened that 65,000 spectators will never forget. A large man pushed past security and fought his way onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's waist, and Derek buried his face in his father's shoulder. Together, step by agonizing step, they crossed that finish line.
That is the gospel in running shoes. Faith is not the absence of injury or the guarantee of a gold medal. Faith is what makes you stand back up. And here is the beautiful part — before Derek even knew to look for help, his father was already running toward him.
The Almighty does not wait for us to have it all together. He meets us mid-collapse. As the psalmist wrote, "Even though I fall, I will not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholds me with His hand."
You will not finish alone.
