Wisdom's Feast: Christ's Universal Invitation to Nourishment
"Come, eat of My bread" — Wisdom's invitation in Proverbs 9:5 unveils Christ as the host of salvation's feast. The Son of God, represented throughout Proverbs as Wisdom (Chokmah), extends this invitation universally: Elohim shows no partiality of persons. The invitation bears three marks. First, it is urged with affectionate earnestness—not compelled by coercion or legal statute, but by the mercies of God and the gentleness of Christ. Second, its rejection leaves humanity inexcusable; some excuse themselves through self-denial or prior engagements, pleading speculation, worldliness, even domestic ties. Third, acceptance requires consideration of four inducements: the rank of the Inviter Himself; the select company of the wise and good meeting as equals at salvation's table; the occasion—to supply immortal food and meat enduring unto everlasting life; and the consequences of refusal, risking God's favor entirely.
The soul's diet is Christ's provision alone. This was prefigured in the manna and foreshadowed in the rock yielding water. The Word feeds the soul; the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, instituted and first administered by Christ Himself, nourishes believers. None but He possesses authority from heaven and the power to provide wholesome spiritual diet. Yet coming to the feast requires active participation—sullenness at the table profits nothing. Acceptance demands both arrival and consumption of Wisdom's provision.
