Wisdom's Speech and Folly's Destruction in Proverbs 9
In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found.—Solomon presents three sharp contrasts that expose the consequences of knowledge and ignorance.
An Intellectual Contrast: The intelligent man communicates wisdom; when he speaks, men are enlightened, their minds set to thinking, their spirits refreshed. Knowledge in the mind generates appetite for greater intelligence and capacity to receive it. By contrast, the man void of understanding requires a rod for his back—he lacks the reasoning to be swayed by argument. His reckless speech brings mischief; his babbling meddles in others' concerns until his mouth draws him toward destruction.
A Social Contrast: The wealthy man trusts his "strong city," yet cannot exclude disease, bereavement, death, or anxiety. Riches dispose their possessors to false security where none exists.
A Moral Contrast: Righteous labour tends toward life—bodily, mental, and spiritual. Sin stands as true antithesis to life itself. Sin is death: the death of the true, the divine, and the happy. According to the constitution of things established by Elohim, this moral law operates inevitably. The fool's mouth rushes toward his own ruin because his words flow from an understanding separated from Yahweh's wisdom. The wise man, by contrast, speaks life into the darkness around him, his words bearing the mark of understanding rooted in fear of the Lord.
