Witness: Community Flourishing in Exile - Anabaptist (Jeremiah 29:11)
Have you ever seen the movie Witness, where the peaceful Amish community stands in stark contrast to the chaotic world that surrounds it? Imagine for a moment the vibrant colors of their world: the earthy browns of handmade barns, the gentle hum of horse-drawn buggies on dirt roads, and the laughter of children playing under the watchful eyes of their parents. In the midst of this serene existence, they face the stark realities of a society that often feels foreign to them. Yet, rather than retreating into isolation, they flourish as resident aliens, embracing their distinctiveness while still engaging with the world around them.
In Jeremiah 29, God addresses the exiles in Babylon, urging them to “build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.” He calls them to marry and multiply—essentially, to invest in the very fabric of community life, even in a land that is not their own. God’s promise of shalom, a deep and abiding welfare, is linked not to escape but to faithfulness within community.
Consider the Amish again. They seek the flourishing of their neighbors not by conforming to the values of mainstream society, but by living out their principles of love, service, and humility. They exemplify Anabaptist theology, viewing the church as a counter-cultural community that reflects God's kingdom here and now.
As we engage with our own neighborhoods—filled with their noise and struggles—let us remember that our call is similar. We are to cultivate and nurture, to invest in relationships while holding fast to our identity in Christ. In doing so, we embody a hope that shines brightly amidst the darkness of exile, showing others the beauty of a life lived in purpose and community. Let us lean into God’s promise of flourishing, not just for ourselves, but for all those around us.
