Words from the Fire: Exodus 20:1-17
And God spoke all these words:
The mountain still burning. The people still trembling. And then—God spoke. Not through Moses. Not through an angel. God himself, audibly, to an entire nation. All these words.
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Identity first. Before commands, relationship. I am the LORD your God. The God who acted. Who brought you out. The commands flow from deliverance, not toward it. You belong to me because I rescued you.
