You Shall Not Pass

In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the company is fleeing through the Mines of Moria when a Balrog — an ancient demon of shadow and flame — rises from the deep to destroy them. The hobbits, the warriors, even the Elf lord Legolas stand frozen in terror. There is no fighting this enemy. There is only running.

But Gandalf turns and faces it.

He plants his staff on the narrow bridge of Khazad-dûm and speaks those words the darkness does not expect: "You shall not pass!" The stone cracks beneath them. The Balrog plunges into the abyss — but its fiery whip coils around Gandalf's ankle and drags him down into the dark. His last words to his friends: "Fly, you fools."

The Fellowship survives because someone stood between them and destruction. Someone chose the bridge instead of the door.

This is the shape of every true sacrifice — and it is the shape of the cross. The Almighty did not watch from a distance while evil consumed His children. He stepped onto the bridge. Jesus placed Himself between us and the full weight of sin and death so that we could go free.

The next time you feel the gravity of what Christ endured, remember this: He did not run. He turned and faced the fire — for you.
