A Father on the Track
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal with everything on the line. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and finally made it to the Olympic stage. But halfway around the bend, his hamstring snapped. He crumpled to the track in agony.
What happened next became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Derek stood up. He began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and burst onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while 65,000 people rose to their feet.
Jim Redmond did not care about the rules. He did not care about the officials waving him off. His son was hurting, and love does not sit in the stands when someone you cherish is struggling on the track.
The apostle Paul wrote that love "always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:7). That is exactly what the world witnessed in Barcelona — and it is exactly what our Heavenly Father does for us. When we collapse under the weight of life, God does not watch from a distance. He steps onto the track, wraps His arm around us, and says, "We will finish this together."
