A Father's Finish Line
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal carrying the weight of years of injury and comeback. He had already survived five surgeries. This was his moment.
Halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. Redmond crumpled to the ground as the other runners disappeared ahead of him. Cameras captured his face — not just pain, but devastation. The medical team rushed toward him, but Redmond pulled himself up and began hopping toward the finish line.
Then something happened that no one expected. A large man in a Nike cap pushed past security, fought through officials trying to stop him, and wrapped his arm around the hobbling runner. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. "You don't have to do this," he told his son. Derek replied, "Yes, I do." Jim said, "Then we're going to finish this together."
And they did. Father and son crossed that finish line arm in arm while 65,000 people in Montjuic Olympic Stadium rose to their feet in tears.
That is the love of God. When you have torn everything and the race feels impossible, the Father does not stay in the stands. He breaks through every barrier to reach you. He wraps His arm around you and whispers, "We will finish this together."
You were never meant to limp toward grace alone. The Almighty runs to you — not to carry you off the track, but to walk you home.
