Already Hidden Inside

When a caterpillar enters its chrysalis, something astonishing happens. Its body dissolves into what scientists describe as a kind of biological soup — nearly every structure breaks down. It sounds like destruction. But hidden inside that caterpillar, from the very beginning, are tiny clusters of cells called imaginal discs. Dutch naturalist Jan Swammerdam first observed these structures in the 1660s, and modern biologists have confirmed their remarkable purpose: each disc carries the instructions for a specific part of the butterfly — one for the wing, one for the antenna, one for the leg. While everything else dissolves, these discs survive. They were there all along, waiting.

Sometimes life feels like the chrysalis. Grief, failure, transition — seasons where everything familiar seems to dissolve. You wonder who you are anymore. But here is what the Gospel tells us: your truest identity was placed inside you by your Creator before the breaking ever began. Paul writes, "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

The caterpillar doesn't become something foreign. It becomes what it always carried within. And so it is with you. The Almighty has already hidden your future self inside your present struggle. The dissolution is not the end of your story — it is the condition for your becoming.
