Beyond the Scoreboard

In the summer of 2021, Simone Biles arrived at the Tokyo Olympics as the most decorated gymnast in history. The world had already written her story — more gold, more records, more proof of unmatched greatness. But midway through competition, Biles did the unthinkable. She withdrew. Not because her body broke down, but because she refused to let a scoreboard tell her who she was.

Critics were merciless. They called her a quitter. But Biles understood something most of us take a lifetime to learn — identity built on performance is identity built on sand. She chose wholeness over the world's applause, knowing she was more than what she could produce on any given day.

Three years later, she returned at the 2024 Paris Olympics and won gold again. But what made the comeback extraordinary was the posture behind it. She competed from joy, not desperation. From fullness, not from emptiness.

The Apostle Paul carried the same conviction. He had every credential a devout man could want — circumcised the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee among Pharisees. Yet he counted it all as loss "for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8). Paul's identity was not anchored in achievement. It was anchored in a Person.

The world will always try to shrink you down to your last performance. But the Almighty who knit you together called you Beloved long before the competition began.
