Carried Within

In 2012, researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center published a stunning finding. During pregnancy, cells from the developing baby cross the placental barrier and lodge themselves in the mother's body — in her lungs, her liver, even her brain. These microchimeric cells don't just visit. They take up permanent residence. Scientists led by Dr. J. Lee Nelson detected a child's cells in mothers' brains decades after giving birth.

A mother literally carries her children within her — not just in memory, but in her very tissue. At a cellular level, she is partly them. And they helped shape who she became.

Scripture tells us something strikingly similar about our identity in Christ. Paul writes, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). This isn't just poetry. When we come to faith, something real takes up residence within us. The Holy Spirit doesn't simply visit — He stays. He becomes part of who we are, woven into our identity the way those tiny cells weave themselves into a mother's body.

You are not who you were. You are not merely what the world has labeled you. The living God has written Himself into the fabric of your being. Your deepest identity is not what you carry — it is Who carries you, and Who you carry within.
