Christ Alone: The Foundation That Cannot Be Shaken
Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul establishes three critical truths about spiritual foundations.
First, men attempt to lay alternative foundations. Reason substitutes human logic for divine revelation. Self-righteousness elevates moral achievement above grace. The goodness of God becomes distorted into mere benevolence without accountability. Yet all such foundations fail—they are unauthorised by Yahweh, insufficient for eternity, and ultimately delusive.
Second, Christ alone is the foundation divinely laid. In building, the structure depends entirely upon the foundation's breadth and depth. Elohim Himself appointed this foundation in Isaiah 28:16. Unlike human systems that crumble, this foundation sustains all who trust it.
Third, what we construct upon this foundation will be tested by fire. The Judgment will reveal whose work endures—gold, silver, precious stones—and whose work perishes—wood, hay, stubble. Some whom the world dismisses will see their faithfulness shine brilliantly; others of outward reputation will suffer complete loss.
Christianity stands opposed to every human system ever conceived. It changed the entire structure of public worship and overthrew the altars of heathen idolatry. We lay this foundation personally by bringing Christ through faith to our own souls, declaring with Thomas: "My Lord and my God!"
No foundation exists if Christ is omitted. If Christ is laid, all gospel doctrines harmonize perfectly.
