Christ's Power to Save to the Uttermost
Hebrews 5:25 declares that Christ is "able also to save them to the uttermost." The Apostle establishes Christ's supremacy over the Levitical high priests by grounding His saving power in His eternal intercession: "He ever liveth to make intercession."
Christ's ability to save reaches to three dimensions. First, to the uttermost depths of guilt—the greatest sinners may be pardoned and sanctified through His grace. The dignity of His person as both God and man equips Him with every qualification necessary in a Saviour, appointed by the Father whose infinite wisdom employs no inadequate means.
Second, Christ saves to the uttermost verge of life itself. True repentance is never too late. Though a man hardens his heart for sixty or seventy years, "a look to Christ on the cross may yet dissolve it in tears of deepest penitence." Only when unmoved to death's final breath can we say the sinner is beyond reach. His saving power extends through time's terminus.
Third, Christ saves to the uttermost extent of His people's need—body and soul, temporal and eternal. Salvation comprises innumerable benefits, all of which Christ is mighty to impart. The Adonai's investiture with universal dominion, accomplished through His resurrection from the grave, secures the Church's welfare through His continuous intercession before the Father's throne.
