Divine Providence Directs What Human Counsel Cannot Control
A man's heart deviseth his way, but the Lord directeth his steps.—Proverbs 16:9
The efforts of our activity, however great, remain subject to a superior, invisible power. Higher counsels than ours govern the issues of human conduct. We are given line enough to run a certain length, yet by that very line we are invisibly held, recalled, and checked at Heaven's pleasure.
Among all who acknowledge the existence of Deity, it has been universal belief that He exercises government over human affairs. Yet the manner in which providence interposes—by what means it influences the thoughts of men, while preserving their freedom of will—remains dark and mysterious. The secret power with which Elohim controls sun, moon, and stars is equally inexplicable.
Throughout Scripture, God is represented as rewarding the righteous or chastening them according to His wisdom, and punishing the wicked through various dispensations of His providence. Accident, chance, and fortune are words without meaning. In God's universe, nothing comes to pass causelessly or in vain. Every event has its determined direction.
This doctrine of particular providence carries three essential applications: First, it corrects anxious care about future events—all things rest under wiser direction than we could provide. Second, it enforces moderation of mind in every state, humbling pride in prosperity and preventing despair in adversity. Third, it exposes the vanity of all sinful plans, for sin must be attended with danger.
The great rule of both religion and duty remains: Do thy duty and leave the issue to Heaven.
