Divine Righteousness: Four Transformative Effects
Consider what happens when the soul encounters the righteousness of Elohim. Spurgeon identifies four profound transformations that follow this meeting.
First, divine righteousness convinces us of sin—it functions as a mirror held before conscience. When we behold Adonai's perfect standard, our own corruption becomes undeniable. We cannot hide from truth so absolute.
Second, it reconciles us to trying providences. When affliction comes, we rage against it—until we recognize that Yahweh's righteousness governs all His dealings. The Judge who is absolutely just cannot act unjustly, even when His purposes remain obscured from us. This realization transforms our complaint into submission.
Third, divine righteousness excites a desire to imitate. Beholding holiness, we hunger to reflect it. The psalmist does not merely admire Elohim's justice from a distance; he longs to embody it in his own conduct, to become a living echo of divine character.
