Earthquakes as Ministers of Divine Will and Judgment
When the psalmist writes, "Then the earth shook and trembled" (Psalm 18:7), he invites us to consider earthquakes not as mere physical phenomena but as moral teachers. The Victorians, with Bible in hand, understood that Yahweh—who is "wise in counsel, benevolent in purpose, and almighty in power"—employs even the most destructive forces of nature as ministers of His will.
Earthquakes reveal four essential truths. First, they expose the perilous condition of our earthly existence. The deep insecurity an earthquake strikes to the human soul demonstrates the absurdity of fixing our affections upon material goods (Colossians 3:2). Every moment threatens our destruction; postponing preparation for eternity betrays profound folly.
Second, geology itself testifies to coming crisis. Subterraneous forces have swept away entire epochs; these same forces will one day remake the earth itself. Scripture confirms this: "the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire" (2 Peter 3:10).
Third, earthquakes, storms, pestilences, and famines attest to severity in God's government. The sinner both deserves and requires this severity as corrective mercy.
Fourth, and most importantly, these terrors teach us to seek divine protection through metanoia (repentance) and reliance upon Christ's mediation. The ancient believers obtained this protection; it remains available to all who trust in His name. Is God your protector?
