Every Fragment Returned

On a spring morning in 1972, a man climbed over the railing in St. Peter's Basilica and struck Michelangelo's Pietà fifteen times with a hammer. Mary's nose shattered. Her left arm broke away and fell to the marble floor. Chips flew from her eyelid and veil. In the chaos that followed, bystanders scrambled for the fallen fragments — some to save them, others to pocket them as souvenirs.

Vatican officials had to appeal publicly for the return of every piece. Slowly, fragments came back. For ten months, restorers fitted recovered shards into place like a sacred puzzle, filling what could not be recovered with marble matched to the original Carrara stone. When they finished, the damage was nearly invisible. The masterpiece stood whole again — not replaced, but painstakingly restored.

What strikes me is the appeal for the fragments. Nothing was too small to matter. No sliver was considered lost beyond recovery.

That is the heart of God's work in a broken life. He does not look at your shattered places and start from scratch with lesser material. He calls back every scattered piece. The years lost to addiction. The trust broken by betrayal. The joy stolen by grief. He asks for all of it back. Joel 2:25 promises, "I will restore the years the locusts have eaten." Not a replica of your former life, but your actual life made whole again — by hands that have never stopped caring for the original.
