God's Judgment According to Truth and Perfect Justice
Romans 3:2 assures us that the judgment of God is according to truth. This divine judgment possesses three essential qualities. First, God's judgment is correct—according to the facts of the case, not assumption or hearsay. Second, it is impartial—measured by a true moral standard that respects character rather than circumstance or status. Third, it is equitable—grounded in principles of infallible justice. By Him actions are weighed as upon scales (1 Samuel 2:3); Tekel ("weighed") is written upon each one's conduct (Daniel 5:27).
Rabbi Jochanan Ben Zachai, facing death, wept before his disciples. He contrasted earthly kings—whose anger passes, whose prisons end, whose death is finite—with the King of kings, the holy and blessed God. Should His anger kindle, it lasts forever; His bondage is everlasting; His condemnation brings eternal death. No word or bribe can sway Him. Standing before two ways—hell or paradise—the Rabbi knew not which awaited him, and so he wept.
Anne of Austria told Cardinal Richelieu: "God is a sure paymaster. He may not pay at week's end or year's end, but remember—He pays in the end." This certainty of divine reckoning should prompt reverence. We cannot escape the judgment of God through ignorance, status, or delay. Adonai sees all principles, exercises perfect judgment, and awards with absolute justice.
